Egg Mixture

  • 3 large eggs
  • ¾ cup half-and-half or whole milk or heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup plus more for serving
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch kosher salt

Rolls and Butter

  • 1 12-ounce package Hawaiian sweet rolls
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter divided, plus more for serving

For Serving

  • powdered sugar for serving (optional)

Cooking Instructions

  • Whisk together the eggs, dairy of choice, maple syrup, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and kosher salt in a wide, shallow dish until combined and no streaks of egg remain.
  • Separate the rolls and place half in the egg mixture, soaking all cut sides for about 30 seconds each while keeping the rolls intact. Transfer soaked rolls to a plate.
  • Melt 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the soaked rolls cut side down and cook until golden-brown, about 2 minutes per side. Transfer to a serving plate.
  • Soak the remaining rolls, then melt the remaining butter in the pan before cooking the second batch. Serve warm with powdered sugar or maple syrup.
